First Reading Jonah 1:1-15
The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai: “Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.”
But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord.
Then the Lord sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up. All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship.
But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep. The captain went to him and said, “How can you sleep? Get up and call on your god! Maybe he will take notice of us so that we will not perish.”
Then the sailors said to each other, “Come, let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity.” They cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah. So they asked him, “Tell us, who is responsible for making all this trouble for us? What kind of work do you do? Where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you?”
He answered, “I am a Hebrew and I worship the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.”
This terrified them and they asked, “What have you done?” (They knew he was running away from the Lord, because he had already told them so.)
The sea was getting rougher and rougher. So they asked him, “What should we do to you to make the sea calm down for us?”
“Pick me up and throw me into the sea,” he replied, “and it will become calm. I know that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you.”
Instead, the men did their best to row back to land. But they could not, for the sea grew even wilder than before. Then they cried out to the Lord, “Please, Lord, do not let us die for taking this man’s life. Do not hold us accountable for killing an innocent man, for you, Lord, have done as you pleased.” Then they took Jonah and threw him overboard, and the raging sea grew calm.
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
Psalm 33:1-12
1 Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous;
it is good for the just to sing praises.
2 Praise the Lord with the harp;
play to the Lord upon the psaltery and lyre.
3 Sing a new song; *
sound a fanfare with all your skill upon the trumpet.
4 For the word of the Lord is right,
and all God’s works are sure.
5 You, Lord, love righteousness and justice;
Your loving-kindness fills the whole earth.
6 By your word the heavens were made,
by the breath of your mouth all the heavenly hosts.
7 You gather up the waters of the ocean as in a water-skin
and store up the depths of the sea.
8 Let all the earth fear you, O Lord;
let all who dwell in the world stand in awe of you.
9 For you spoke, and it came to pass;
you commanded, and it stood fast.
10 The Lord brings the will of the nations to naught;
and thwarts the designs of the peoples.
11 But the Lord's will stands fast for ever,
and the designs of God’s heart from age to age.
12 Happy is the nation whose God is the Lord!
happy the people God has chosen for their own!
Second Reading Romans 4:13-17
The promise that he would inherit the world did not come to Abraham or to his descendants through the law but through the righteousness of faith. If it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. For the law brings wrath; but where there is no law, neither is there violation.
For this reason it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his descendants, not only to the adherents of the law but also to those who share the faith of Abraham (for he is the father of all of us, as it is written, “I have made you the father of many nations”) —in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist.
The Word of Lord.
Thanks be to God.

* Gospel Matthew 9:9-13;18-26
The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.
Glory to you, Lord Christ.
As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth; and he said to him, “Follow me.”
And he got up and followed him. And as he sat at dinner in the house, many tax collectors and sinners came and were sitting with him and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” But when he heard this, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. Go and learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have come to call not the righteous but sinners.”
While he was saying these things to them, suddenly a leader of the synagogue came in and knelt before him, saying, “My daughter has just died; but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.” And Jesus got up and followed him, with his disciples. Then suddenly a woman who had been suffering from hemorrhages for twelve years came up behind him and touched the fringe of his cloak, for she said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be made well.” Jesus turned, and seeing her he said, “Take heart, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And instantly the woman was made well. When Jesus came to the leader’s house and saw the flute players and the crowd making a commotion, he said, “Go away; for the girl is not dead but sleeping.” And they laughed at him. But when the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took her by the hand, and the girl got up. And the report of this spread throughout that district.
The Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, Lord Christ.
The Sermon Please be seated at the invitation of the preacher.
* Profession of Faith (taken from the Iona Prayer Book)
We believe in God above us.
Maker and sustainer of all life.
of sun and moon,
of water and earth
of all humanity.
We believe in God beside us.
Jesus Christ, word made flesh,
born of a woman, servant of the poor,
tortured and nailed to a tree.
A man of sorrows, he died forsaken.
He descended into the earth
to the place of death.
On the third day he rose from the tomb.
He ascended into heaven
to be everywhere present,
and his kingdom will come on earth.
We believe in God within us,
the Holy Spirit of Pentecostal fire,
life-giving breath of the church,
Spirit of healing and forgiveness,
source of resurrection and of eternal life.
Amen.
* The Prayers of the People
Because in love and mercy,
You hear us.
* Confession of Sin
Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.
Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us;
that we may delight in your will,
and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your Name. Amen.
* Pronouncement of forgiveness
Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

* The Great Thanksgiving
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give God thanks and praise.
It is important, good, and wonderful to praise you, God of Grace,
For you are the creator of this world,
the restorer of our lives,
and the source of all goodness..
In the person of Jesus, you reveal your nature,
calling forth justice, equity, and love.
Through Jesus, we know the path we should take.
Through your Spirit, we are equipped for the journey.
For these things we give you endless thanks.
Joining our voices with saints and angels as we say/sing:
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna, Hosanna, Hosanna
Hosanna in the highest.
Loving Father, you created all things and called them good.
But we turned away, abused, and wounded your good creatures,
We perverted your good intentions for our welfare and joy.
Humanity suffers. Earth suffers.
We live in a world beset by sin and death.
But you, in your mercy, never give up.
In your love and faithfulness,
You became an infant, grew into a poor man,
Became a criminal on a cross, and then
Resurrected Savior,
All to proclaim that nothing could separate us from your love.
All this you did, to restore what was lost.
To bring us home to you.
On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our
Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks
to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take,
eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the
remembrance of me.”
After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given
thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you:
This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you
and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink
it, do this for the remembrance of me.”
Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:
Christ has died.
Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.
As we honor the mystery of your presence in our lives, we hold this bread and wine as a covenant and promise, that in these gifts of earth, we are nourished by the gifts of heaven. And we give thanks!
Send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts. Let them be for us the Body and Blood of your Son. And nourish us, through them, that we may be Jesus in the world, serving you in unity, consistency, and courageous faith until the day when we lay aside this world, and enter the fulness of joy, with all your saints.
All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty God, now and for ever. AMEN. (sung on organ Sundays)
As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray,
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your Name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those
who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial,
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours,
now and for ever. Amen.
The Breaking of the Bread
Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;
Therefore let us keep the feast, Alleluia
The Gifts of God for the People of God.
Take them in remembrance that Christ is for you, not against you,
Come, be nourished by the life that is truly life.

and grant us strength and courage
to love and serve you
with gladness and singleness of heart;
through Christ our Lord. Amen.
