Dear Barbi:
By way of this letter, and upon the advice of the Commission on Ministry, I am pleased to confirm that as of October 30, 2017 you are a Postulant for the Diaconate from this Diocese. Know that my prayers and support go with you as you move through this first official stage toward ordination. Know also that there are many in this diocesan community who care about you, cherish your ministry now, and look forward to ministering with you in the years ahead. I look forward to continuing to hear from you during Ember Days. Ever faithfully, in Christ, The Rt. Rev. George Wayne Smith Bishop of Missouri On Monday, October 30 Bishop Smith met with Barbi and me and confirmed that she is now indeed a Postulant for the Diaconate (postulancy is an initial time of preparation and testing for ordained ministry). The next step for Barbi is Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE). During this period she will be engaged in working with one of the programs in the greater St. Louis area that teach pastoral and spiritual care. The reference to Ember Days is this: seminarians, postulants and candidates for Holy Orders are required by Canon Law to write to the Bishop about their studies, ministry, and personal lives on each of the four Embertides during the Liturgical Year. ~Fr.
